What's Open on Canada Day 2014

Canada Day is so much better when it's on a Monday or a Friday - making it an easy long-weekend with your employer. This year is one of those 3 in 7 years when it's a mid-week day, forcing you to add that extra vacation day or two in order to fully unplug from work for more than 2 days at a time.

Personally, I'll be at work on Monday, since I like to get paid. Such is the life of a contract entrepreneur...

But I still have a fabulous Canada Day party to look forward to on Tuesday in the magnificent backyard of some gracious friends in the neighborhood. Fajitas, margaritas, a big pool and a great deck. Can't wait! I'm a little nervous to make an appetizer for almost 100 people...but I will try my best!

So What Is Open on Canada Day, you ask? Good question. And the answer is: not much. That means grab what you need (appetizer ingredients for me!) on MONDAY or you'll be out. of. luck.

LCBO: Closed

The Beer Store: (does anyone else find it ridiculous that we - as Ontarians - call our beer store The Beer Store? How simple can you get?). Anyway, it's Closed.

Grocery Stores: closed

Shoppers Drug Mart: mall-based stores are closed, but stand-alone stores are mostly open. Check their website for the hours of your closest store. A great place for staples like milk, bread, tissue, sunscreen and snacks if you can't wait an extra day.

Home Depot: Home Depots are open across the country BUT only their Garden Centres in Ontario. So if you really, really need plants or backyard-project-stuff that day, head over. For the specific hours of each store across Canada, click here

Typical Malls (Mapleview, Yorkdale, Sherway Gardens): Closed.

Outlets:
- Vaughan Mills: Open 10am-7pm
- Halton Hills: Closed
- Outlet Collection at Niagara (new): Open 10am-6pm

Tourist Malls
- The Eaton Centre: open 10am-6pm

Downtown Shopping Areas:
- Bloor Street in Toronto: many open (Holt Renfrew 12-6, The Bay 11-6)
- Downtown Oakville: some are open (ex: Lululemon 10-7)
- Downtown Burlington: all shops are closed except food/drink. A nice day for some gelato and a walk on the pier, no?
